The best thing to do is to not act like a tourist, and do not display items of extreme wealth such as laptops, jewelry, etc. Lack of man power, low wages and inappropriate training contribute to a lack of professionalism. Of significant concern is that policemen may not always provide the best quality of assistance and even be more dangerous than the criminals itself. While in recent years, the overall crime levels are steadily decreasing, Brazil continues to have moderately high crime rates in various aspects, even with a moderate homicide rate (about 28 per 100,000 people). Armed bandits have more recently been attacking schools, hotels and even innocent people in the streets. Brazil is one of the most criminalized countries of the world, therefore the crime rate is high, even for a developing nation. If your plan is to stay like 2 or 3 days in Brasilia then fly to another city, it´s ok, it´s completely worth this kind of short stay. It´s quite smaller than Sao Paulo, so it has fewer restaurants, discos and stuff. Two pieces of advice I can give you as well every foreigner planning to come here no matter the city you wish to visit or stay: a) dont go where you dont know anything about b) dont walk around on your own at late night. Yes, my country is more violent when compared to Western Europe or USA, but believe me: you will be safe if you stick to the cities central areas and if you dont act like a lot of european fools eager to know slums (favelas) or poor areas. Brazil is not like Iraq and we arent in a civil war.
